PRIORITIES

Protect Laguna’s Natural and Historic Resources

A skyline shaped by majestic hillsides and canyons, open space for wildlife and outdoor adventure, marine protected areas where sea life thrives, artist colonies, historic cottages and buildings, iconic landmarks… Laguna Beach is a truly special place on earth.

Preserving these natural and historic resources has required constant vigilance by Village Laguna and other community groups, as well as the mobilization of an informed and engaged citizenry. These efforts helped earn Laguna Beach its status as the only city in the United States to be designated in its entirety as a Historic American Landscape.

Celebrate The Laguna You Love

Protecting and celebrating the best of our town is a labor of love. Since 1973, Village Laguna has been organizing the annual Charm House Tour, which takes visitors inside classic Laguna bungalows and cottages, some dating back to the early 1900s. Focusing on a different neighborhood every year, the tour showcases homes that have been lovingly preserved by thoughtful homeowners who share our admiration for Laguna’s history. We also support the efforts of other community groups to promote appreciation for our oceans, hillsides and canyons, and architectural heritage.

Educate the Community

Nothing can stop environmental destruction and overdevelopment better than an informed citizenry. Education has been central to Village Laguna’s mission since 1971, when its founders mobilized residents to pass a 36-foot height limit that protects our coastline and skyline to this day. Our emails, newsletters and radio show help the community stay up-to-date on what’s happening locally and in city, county and state government. Our Did You Know campaigns raise awareness about fiscal matters as well as quality-of-life issues like traffic and overtourism.

Prepare for a Bright Future

Our collective responsibility goes beyond preservation. We also need to cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards. Every year since 1978, Village Laguna has awarded a scholarship to a graduating senior from Laguna Beach High School who has demonstrated leadership and been involved in activities that protect the environment and promote humanitarian goals. We also support local and state initiatives that enhance climate resilience and future readiness.

Finding a Better Way Forward

Laguna Beach is under increasing pressure to approve new development and redevelopment. Many proposed projects violate our General Plan, design review standards and municipal codes, putting our natural and historic resources at risk. That’s when Village Laguna gets involved. Because we know there is a way for our community to grow and thrive without losing its character.
